An Affidavit of Support sample is a document that a friend, family member or organization executes agreeing under oath to accept financial responsibility for an international student in the United States.
If the alien is a international student he or she must prove they have available funds and sufficient financial resources to support their intent to live and study in the U.S.
Students sponsored by a company must submit proof that the employee signing the affidavit has the legal authorization to do so along with the bank statement or letter showing minimum required balance.
Students are required to submit an Affidavit of Support either personally or through a sponsor and a bank statement. These documents must not be older than 3 to 4 weeks.
WHAT IS A SPONSOR?
A sponsor is a person an individual, usually a qualifying family member or an employer, who files an affidavit of support for an alien seeking College/University admission, adjustment of status or admission to the United States of America.
A sponsor is an individual who:
- is a citizen or national of the United States or a legal resident alien of the United States
- is petitioning for the admission of the alien under INA § 204
- is at least 18 years of age;
- can demonstrate the means to maintain an annual income equal to at least 125% of the Federal poverty line
- is domiciled in any of the several States of the United States, the District of Colombia, or any territory or possession of the United States
To meet the Income requirement for sponsorship, a sponsor must:
- demonstrate that they can maintain an annual income equal to at least 125 percent of the Federal poverty line (this requirement can be satisfied if the sponsor or sponsored alien can demonstrate holding significant assets)
- provide certified copies of their last 3 years of federal income tax returns
- provide a statement under oath that the submitted returns are genuine.
- demonstrate the means to maintain an annual income of only 100 percent of the federal poverty line, if the sponsor is on active duty in the US armed forces and is the child or spouse of the sponsored alien

Sponsor name must match the name on certifying bank letter or statement.
